Mastery Levels measure how much Experience a Profession has gained. Unlike Efficiency, a profession's mastery level cannot decrease.
There are three distinct mastery levels: Beginner, Advanced, and Master. Players are beginners of their profession by default.
Bonuses
Upon increasing a profession's mastery level, that profession will recieve permanent bonuses. These bonuses are different for Gathering Professions and Crafting Professions.
Gathering Professions
Each time a gathering profession's (or Cooking's) mastery level increases, the next tier of that profession's corresponding resource nodes will be unlocked (up to tier 3).
There are 5 mastery levels in total:

Journeyman | Enables gathering of Tier 2 veins. |
Craftsman | Enables gathering of Tier 3 veins. |
